Solid State Drive

Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Solid State Drive

There are models of modern laptops that are equipped with a solid-state drive. This type of computer memory has been on the market for a long time, but more recently, it has been recognized by industry and consumers as a very viable alternative to traditional hard drives.

What is a solid-state drive?

Solid State Drive

The term solid-state, as applied to an electronic circuit, indicates that it is completely constructed of semiconductors. This term was originally used for electronics, for example, a transistor receiver built on semiconductors, rather than vacuum tubes. Currently, electronics work on semiconductors and chips, and in the construction of SSD (solid-state drive), the same technology is applied. Thus, the main storage medium operates on semiconductors, and not on magnetic media, like a hard disk.

This type of information storage is identical to the memory of flash drives connected to the USB port. The use of solid-state drives and flash drives of the same type of non-volatile memory, chips that store this information, a feature of this type of device. But their difference is that they have different form factors and disk capacities. The flash drive is designed for external use in a computer system, while the SSD is integrated inside the computer, replacing a traditional hard drive.

Externally, an SSD is almost no different from a traditional hard drive. The design is intended to replace the “hard drive” in a laptop or desktop PC. SSD sizes are standard and are comparable to a 1.8-inch, 2.5-inch, or 3.5-inch hard drive. It also uses the SATA interface, or a serial interface for exchanging data with information storage devices, so that an SSD can easily fit into any computer instead of a hard disk.

Why use a solid-state drive?

Solid-state drives have some improved technical specifications that give them an advantage when compared with magnetic hard drives. A solid-state drive device is such that there are no moving parts at all. The process of reading the information on a traditional disk takes place using magnetic disks coated with a layer of chromium dioxide, driven by a spindle motor, and reading heads, while on solid-state disks this process is processed by flash memory chips. Three advantages arise from this:

  • Energy-saving due to less power consumption;
  • High-speed access to data;
  • Higher reliability.

Energy consumption is key for using a solid-state drive in desktop PCs and laptops. The use of SSDs will save much more energy than a regular hard drive since it does not have an engine, which means that it does not consume power. To solve this problem, hybrid hard drives are currently being manufactured by the industry, which consumes more energy than SSDs.

Quick access to data from SSD-drives occurs instantly because the disk does not need to unwind or wait for the movement of the head of the hard disk. Hybrid hard drives also tend to slow down, but the constant use of the drive nullifies the advantage.

The reliability factor for portable storage is a key factor for many portable storage users. Hard drive plates are very fragile and sensitive. Even a slight movement associated with shaking can cause a process that will make the disk unreadable.

Since the data in the SSD is stored in memory chips, and there are no moving parts, any kind of impact is not terrible for him. But there is one reason why most users will abandon SSDs. No doubt, the mechanical part of a solid-state drive has some advantages, but it has a limited period of use.

This is because the SSD has a fixed number of write cycles, less than what can be done on the hard drive. However, for most ordinary consumers, a limited recording cycle is not a serious problem.

Why aren’t SSDs widespread?

As with most low-cost computer technologies, an SSD, to use them on laptops and desktop computers, should be inexpensive to get additional recognition from ordinary users. At the moment, the cost of one gigabyte of disk memory is one dollar, which is ten times more than the equivalent cost of a hard disk.

The choice in favor of a hard drive or solid-state drive will help to make the characteristics of their RAM, that is, their capacity. An average laptop equipped with an SSD will have a disk space of 128 or 256 GB. Such equipment corresponds to the equipment of laptops about a few years ago.

Current laptops are equipped with 500 GB or more RAM stored on your hard drive. Not to mention stationary PCs, which have even greater discrepancies with a solid-state drive, because a modern hard drive that runs in a medium-sized personal PC has up to one terabyte or more of disk space.

Even despite the huge difference in power, for many users, the large capacity of the hard drives seems unnecessary, but solid-state drives, as a rule, offer a sufficient level of information storage. Besides, to achieve higher performance will allow external storage media, Pubg lite, these are USB 3.0, eSATA, to which you can quickly and very easily transfer the necessary files.
